However, the celebrities are not the only reason for their storming popularity. Rolex has a prominent position in sports because of its flawless designs that make them resilient to the wear and tear that comes with success in sports. Whether they are dunked in thousands of metres of seawater or encrusted with frost at high pressures on the top of mountain peaks, Rolex never seem to fail. “From the bottom of the ocean to the top of Mount Everest”, the marketing of Rolex watches has been carefully orchestrated not only by Rolex itself but also by the new breed of Rolex Vintage watch dealers.

There are many reasons why Rolex watches are such delightful collectables apart from their power of granting supposed celebrity status and their durability to whatever is thrown at them. Firstly, there is a history and tradition behind Rolex. They virtually invented the modern day wristwatch, the water resistant case, and the self-winding mechanism among other innovations and contributions. They also produce more COSC certified watches then any other watchmaker, and have done so for many years. Rolex is also one of the few watch houses that produces their own movements (most other brands of mechanical watches buy movements made by other companies). In fact, Rolex meticulously controls the production of nearly every last part, in every last component that are used in their watches. It’s one of the many reasons why their watches cost more, and one of the things that makes Rolex so special.

Rolex caters to every Professional and Fantasy

Rolex have always been ahead of its time, its vision is second to none, and it not only understood the importance of tool watches before any other watch manufacturer but stayed the course even though the watches were not very popular in the 1970’s. All great companies have based their success on brand familiarity. Porsche and Mercedes Benz are other fine examples. The basic design is the same, but tweaking occurs every few years. Rolex went one step further, it catered to every profession and fantasy.

There is something for everyone, and more. Rolex Collectors also have the opportunity to create a specialist collection such as Rare Dive watches or Daytonas. Then there are model and dial variations, hybrids, prototypes, special editions, special orders, presentation models, Double Name Rolex, and the list goes on.

It is enough to keep one occupied for a life time. Just when you think you got it all, a never been seen variation is discovered. A few years ago, The Rolex Single Red Sea Dweller was a myth, and The Rolex Single Red Sea Dweller or a DRSD without a Gas Valve was only a myth. Today it is a reality.

The Pilot / The Rolex GMT

The Rolex GMT indicates simultainously the exact time in two chosen time-zones, acoording the reqirements of the moment. They may be GMT and New York, the time in Moscow or Hongkong, or any other two places in the world. The Rolex GMT was designed to meet the demands of Pilots and Crew Members of Commercial Airliners, and also proved to be a valuable aid for Sea Captains, Memebers of the Armed Forces, and Tavelling Business Excutives.

The James Bond Submariners

The Rolex Research and Development department had been processing these watches many years before official introduction, and the Rolex Submariner appears in the underwater documentary "Le monde du silence" in 1953. Thus IMHO the first Submariner to be produced by RWC was the Model 6200. The younger reference number adds substance to the logic.

The Rolex Submariner, introduced in the early 50’s, laid down the tracks upon which most of their competitors would follow. From the rotating bezez to the flip lock clasp and extension link (to wear outside a wetsuit with the minimum of fuss) - all Rolex innovations. Rolex invented the business model for future generations. He who is first to the market place with a new product, wins.

The Rolex Big Crown Submainers are, today, very highly prized by serious Rolex Collectors.

The Diver / The Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is a watch especially designed for all submarine and aquatic activities. To safely explore the world beneath the sea a reliable watch is essential. Deep sea divers, underwater explorers or fishermen know that their lives depends on knowing how long their air supply will last, how long they have been underwater and how much time they must spend at each decompression stage on their steady ascent to the surface.

For them, Rolex, the pioneers of waterproof wristwatches have created a pressure proof watch guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 200 metres. The Rolex Submariner, the officially approved diver’s watch of may of the world’s navies has specially designed markers and hands for easy reading at a glance even in the twilight of deep water. The auto lock safety revolving bezel which can only be turned by pressing down on the bezel is doubly calibrated in fives, from 0 to 60, and in units from 0 to 15. The 0 mark can be set against the second, minute or hour hand and elapsed time can be read quickly on the calibrated bezel.

The Rolex Submariner is a strong and reliable wristwatch, the importance of which has already been recognised by those concerned in sea going or submarine activities. Originally conceived as a contribution to the sports of underwater exploration, the Rolex Submariner has now also become one of the most popular models in the Rolex Sports watch range.
