A Rolex Collection is not solely about watches, it’s
much more. There are Collectors of Rolex Watch Boxes,
Booklets, Vintage Watch Stands, Shop Window Displays,
Vintage Ads, Rolex Letters, Rolex Vintage Catalogues,
the list seems endless.
Three Major
Collections have been sold in the last 10 years by Major
Auction Houses:-
The Ravenborg
Collection by Christie’s September 1997. Approximately
390 lots.
The Swiss
Collection by Sotheby’s. From 2001 to 2005. Approximately
600 lots.
The Mondani
Collection by Antiquorum May 2006. Approximately 300
lots.
Not only
were the lots absorbed by hungry Rolex Vintage Dealers
and Collectors with relative ease, but it brought new
collectors to the market place. Record prices were achieved
at each auction.
With higher
prices, we have seen an influx of fakes. Thus it is
important for new entrants to find themselves an honest
network of dealers and stick with them. Do not try and
“do it yourself”, it will not work in the
long run. Also more and more people are treating watches
as investments and collectables, and this has been a
gradual process over the last few years
Vintage Rolex
Sports Watches are still greatly undervalued, and buyers
far out strip sellers, and new collectors are coming
into the market practically on a daily basis. The Internet
has broadened collector’s horizons, and with the
introduction of Rolex Watch Forums, we have all gained
and shared knowledge. Serious Rolex Collectors are in
the hobby for the long haul, taking the best part of
20 to 25 years to put a collection together.
Pateks,
Vacherons, etc have their charm, and elegance, but I
will take a Sporty Rolex anytime over them, and what
more, Patek Collectors may not admit it publicly, but
they would too.
